Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu Calls for Collective Action at Inaugural Lagos Waterfront Summit

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has emphasized the urgent need to protect and preserve Lagos’ lagoon and waterfronts during the first Lagos State Waterfront Summit, themed “Pressure on the Lagoon: The Lagos Experience.”
Speaking at the summit, the governor described the lagoon as the lifeblood of Lagos—powering trade, enabling transport, and shaping the state’s cultural identity. However, he noted that pollution, unregulated activities, and the city’s rapid growth have placed the lagoon under severe pressure.
“This summit is about protecting something that belongs to all of us and making sure it continues to serve future generations,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He called on stakeholders, communities, and residents to adopt a shared sense of responsibility and commit to stronger collective efforts in safeguarding the lagoon and managing Lagos’ waterfronts sustainably.
The summit brought together policymakers, environmental experts, and development partners to discuss strategies for sustainable waterfront management and long-term environmental protection.
