NIS to Deliver Passports Within One Week, Scales Up Production Capacity to 5,000 Daily
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is set to deliver passports to Nigerians within one week, marking a historic shift as passport production becomes centralised for the first time in 62 years.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Thursday during an inspection of the newly established Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja.
“The project is 100 per cent ready. Nigeria can now be more productive and efficient in delivering passport services,” Tunji-Ojo said.
He explained that the previous machines could only produce between 250 and 300 passports daily, but the upgraded system now boasts a capacity of 4,500 to 5,000 passports per day.
“With this, NIS can now meet daily demands within just four to five hours of operation. This is a complete game-changer for passport processing in Nigeria,” he added.
The minister noted that while the government had initially promised a two-week delivery timeline, the new system would cut the waiting period to just one week.
“Automation and optimisation are crucial for keeping this promise to Nigerians,” Tunji-Ojo stressed.
He further explained that the centralised production model, in line with global standards, would enhance uniformity and strengthen the integrity of Nigerian travel documents internationally.
According to him, the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda, designed to boost institutional capacity, improve efficiency, and transform service delivery across key government agencies.
